Obituary for Ian Berith Scott
Peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre on Thursday December 21, 2017, Ian Berith Scott of Winnipeg, formerly of Holland MB, passed away at the age of 43 years.
Ian leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife Tanya Jakob, sons Hunter & Ronin, parents Sandra & Wil Rex of Holland, sister Shannon Scott & niece Jorja of Medicine Hat AB, brother Tim Rex & wife Ainsley Wray of Winnipeg, as well as numerous extended family & friends. Ian was predeceased by his father Richard Scott and by sister Katlyn Rex.
On October 1, 1974, a glorious autumn day, Ian Berith Scott entered this realm. It was his Mom’s birthday and for the next 43 years, they shared the joy of “birthdays”. He was an easy-going kid with a great smile, with just the right amount of curiosity, an extraordinarily generous heart, a love of reading, an amazing imagination and boundless energy. He had an active mind and enjoyed challenging those around him and, in turn, being challenged.
He was born in Saskatoon though raised in Southwestern Manitoba, living in a variety of towns, including Brandon, Carman and Holland, where his family settled. The “Big Hill” was always Ian’s happy place. He was so proud of his home and he made sure that he showcased it at every opportunity. Work took him all over the world, yet he never found a place more peaceful and special then the Hills. His career path took him full circle. For over ten years, while employed as the Director of Study Manitoba School Divisions, he was able to showcase his love and pride for Southwestern Manitoba to international students and administrators from all over the world.
He surrounded himself with things that he considered precious – a special pen, a favorite beanie, sunglasses, paintings from far and wide, good books, good scotch and most of all PEOPLE! He gathered friends wherever he lived and nurtured many of those friendships his whole life. He always accepted of people and, in fact, celebrated people’s eccentricities, encouraging them and loving them for who they were.
After high school, he moved west for work. There he developed a love of motorcycles. Once back in Manitoba, he decided to go back to school and his love for the outdoors and adventures continued. Being in the moment and connecting with nature and animals is when he felt most alive. His free spirit was fed by his love of “riding”, whether a horse or his Harley. This passion kept him centered.
He relished his time at Red River College, first as a student and later employed by them. It was during this time that he met Tanya, the “love of his life”. When he met her, he was so sure that he called home to tell the family that he had found the “one”. When he was asked what made him so sure, he responded that he simply felt a sense of destiny with this “beautiful woman”. They shared their love of travel and culture, and built a home that represented community, where music and art played a central role.
Becoming a father was a dream come true for Ian. He said that his boys - Hunter and Ronin - made him feel complete. He revelled in every change, he loved watching them learn new things – to walk, to talk and to play. Getting up early with his boys was sacred time. He loved that they were good brothers to each other and he had big dreams for both of them. He led by example and showed them a life of adventure, play and fun. He imparted philosophies like remembering that we are travelers, not tourists.
He was a Renaissance Man. He never focused on one thing and encouraged balance. He lived life by his fundamentals:
• Personal growth,
• Spirituality,
• Meditation,
• Exercise, and
• Good food and drink.
All of this gave him courage each day until his passing. Quality of life held more power than any illness and he worked harder than anyone to maintain a sense of normalcy in his life. Truly symbolic of the Winter Solstice, he loved this season and embraced his light within… simply encouraging us all to do the same.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Holland United Church. Rev. Robert Campbell officiated. Interment followed at Brookdale Cemetery.
