Obituary for Murray Sidney Jones

Murray Sidney Jones
Murray Jones of Cypress River MB passed away peacefully at the Wawanesa Health Centre on Saturday February 17, 2018 at 91 years of age.

Murray was born December 12, 1926, the 13th of 14 children born to John and Jane Jones of Cypress River. He lived his entire life in the Cypress area.

Murray married Jean (Sholdice) June 7, 1958. Murray and Jean would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. They had 4 daughters, Sherry, Shirley, Karen and Betty. Their family moved to town in the summer of 1968. Murray farmed for many years as well as working for Tiger Hills School Division as a bus driver and custodian of the Cypress River School, the R. M. of Victoria, curling rink icemaker and caretaker, Manitoba Hydro, as well as for numerous farmers in the area.

Murray belonged to the Cypress Calf Club, Cypress Wildlife Association and the Cypress Curling Club. He was an avid sports fan of baseball, hockey and curling. Murray played all kinds of card and board games over the years (very competitively). He also really enjoyed Belgium Bowling.

In 1970 Murray and 4 friends constructed a raft as a centennial project, and travelled down the Assiniboine River from North of Cypress to the steps of the Manitoba Legislative Building in Winnipeg.

His greatest enjoyment in life, other than his family, was definitely the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, snowmobiling, and drives through the sand hills north of Cypress. Murray could fix almost anything and would spend hours on a project.

Murray and Jean enjoyed vacations to Wales, Arizona, Black Hills South Dakota and Canada's Rocky Mountains as well as many camping and fishing trips with friends and family.

Murray leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife Jean (nee Sholdice), daughters Sherry (Greg) Truelove of Cypress River, Shirley (Neil) Gobelle of Winnipeg, Karen Desrosiers (Gerry Rech) of Winnipeg, Betty (Glen) Barr of Sherwood Park AB; eight grandchildren Christopher, Wesley (Jaymie), Taylor, Sydney, Stephen, Devin, Travis and Shane & by one great grandchild Maddyx.
He is also survived by brothers & sisters-in-laws Margaret (Lyall) Lalonde, Joyce (Felix) Desrochers, Ralph (Vi) Sholdice, Brian (Elaine) Sholdice, Sharon (Greg) King as well as numerous extended relatives.

A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday February 22, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Glencoe Cemetery, Cypress River with Sandra Rex officiating.
Following the interment, a reception will be held in the Cypress River Memorial Hall. Friends that so desire, memorial donations can be made in Murray's memory to the Cypress River & Area Foundation, Box 86, Cypress River MB, R0K 0P0 or to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, Unit 4B, 457-9th St. Brandon MB R7A 1K2.
