My name is Mike Lawrence and I am one of grandpa’s grandchildren. I would like to say a few words on behalf of myself, my brother and my sister, Jeff and Nancy.
Our grandpa was a great man. When we think about him the words that come to mind are: hard working, caring, humorous, faithful, respectful, storyteller, and family man. These are just a few words that come to mind, but it seems impossible to summarize how great a person he was.
There are many memories we have of grandpa:
His love of sweets and desserts.
There was always a secrete stash of peppermints hidden in the cabinet under the good china. When those couldn’t be found there was always bread and honey.
Helping with the chores, such as throwing bales, shoveling manure, and driving the grain truck. For some reason these things never felt like work. We enjoyed helping grandpa whenever we could.
Mowing the lawn on the riding lawn mower and driving the old Ford truck. It was always a good time preparing his afternoon coffee and cookies with grandma and delivering it to him.
Watching the Blue Jays game after supper.
I wasn’t even a fan of baseball but with grandpa in the room it was very comforting and peaceful.
His love of card games and cribbage.
Grandpa loved winning and it was many years before we realized that he let us win.
Tending the garden.
For some reason the food from grandma and grandpa’s garden always tasted great.
Picking Raspberries.
Every time we eat one of these we will remember you and the serenity of the farm.
We are going to miss our grandpa’s smile, his wit and love. Although our hearts hurt we feel blessed we were able to have you for so long.
Thank you for being such as wonderful person to us and our family. We will always cherish the good feelings of our memories of you.
We all miss you and will love you always.
Playing crib to best of 5 was always so much fun and I always liked to boast that when the two guys with the September 21st birthdays teamed up, we were unbeatable.
“Raiding” Grandpas garden for rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries and whatever else he insisted we take as well sometimes made it a challenge to find room in the car for all of his generosity.
He always struck me as someone to aspire to be like should I ever reach the age of a nonagenarian. (I had to look that one up) The farm yard was always well tended with a beautiful flowerbed and bountiful vegetable garden. Never one to not do what needed to be done around the yard just because he was in his nineties. I even managed to get him on the back of my motorcycle, which at 88 years old at the time, I feel was pretty fearless.
I feel honoured to have been able to get to know him and spend as much time with him as I did with him.
Love from Dan Dawson, Jennifer Adair, Quinn, & Archer
